Christians Against Poverty (CAP)

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Tameside were delighted to invite some of the families they are helping and their team of volunteer support workers to a good old fashioned Fish and Chips supper on Friday 1st May at Carmel Christian Centre, Denton, where the Tameside Office is based.
Centre Manager, Lisa Gilmore said "We had an amazing evening with over 90 people coming on the night. Everyone enjoys fish & chips and Renfrews English Fish & Chip Shop were brilliant in relaying the food over to us. Our special guest for the night was Rod Williams, from CAP Head Office, who did some fantastic illusions for us, Dynamo style. Rod also shared his amazing life story, about how he turned his world away from a life of drug addiction. Rod who has released his autobiography, The Real Deal, was only to happy to sign his book afterwards."
CAP works with families who are struggling with severe debt offering free help. Lisa continued " No one should live in fear of debt, there is free help out there. I would encourage anyone struggling to put food on the table or pay their normal household bills because of debt to get in touch with us. The journey to get out of debt is hardwork and takes some determination so we like to bless our clients from time to time to acknowledge how well they are doing. Who doesnt enjoy a night out? "

St Lawrence Church Denton

Free entry Refreshments available
St Lawrence Denton, one of the ten most recognised features of Tameside, have reordered the historical black and white Tudor church building combining past, present and future to make it the local community hub in the 21st century.
‘Experience Pentecost’ (also known as Whitsuntide, remember the Whit Walks?) is designed to enable everyone to gain a fuller understanding of the significance of this major festival of the church which is celebrated 50 days after Easter.
Central to this festival is the coming of the person of the Holy Spirit, but unlike Christmas, Easter and Harvest, there is no recognition of it in the outside world by means of present-giving, chocolate or giving to the needy.
However, this is where the Church began, and gives the start of the ongoing story after the Resurrection of Jesus, and explains why there is a church today.
Six stations will be set up around the church to provide an interactive, multi-sensory way to engage imaginatively with the events surrounding Pentecost, dealing with issues of Waiting, Receiving, Telling, Doing, Sharing and Growing.
We hope you will be able to join us.

Walking Football

Session at Denton Youth FC on King Street.

One of the fastest growing sports in the country has come to Denton with Age UK Tameside setting up a Walking Football group at the home
Session at Denton Youth FC on King Street.
of Denton Youth FC on King Street with sessions every Tuesday at 10am.

The slowed down version of the beautiful game is especially attractive to older men who value the chance to spend time with other men like themselves, get some exercise and fresh air and have a good laugh.

Mick Owen who organises the session on behalf of a borough-wide partnership led by Age UK explained: "Essentially we play football but without the rushing about and the tackling which means older men who might have thought their playing days were long gone can enjoy the essentials of football without risking injury."

The almost magnetic lure of the game which every boy grew up playing is such that men with conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and depression have all seen their health improve while men with new knees and new hips have been able to get back into physical activity and enjoy being part of the community again.

Anyone who would like to try Walking Football or knows someone who might enjoy it should contact Mick on 07944 605508 or at mickowen@talktalk.net or just turn up any Tuesday at King Street.
